'What Price New York City Wireless: The Politics of Technology'

The Internet Society (ISOC) is an open international body that promotes access to, and beneficial use of, internet technology. A year ago, Feb 2005, the New York City Council unanimously adopted Resolution No. 669 to provide low or no-cost broadband Internet access to affordable housing residents throughout the city. On December 21, 2005 the NYC Council passed Int. No. 625-A, establishing a permanent advisory committee regarding use of municipal resources for universal access to broadband technologies. At this forum, held Mar 1, 2006 under the auspices of the Metropolitan NY Chapter of the Internet Society, Gale Brewer, chair of City's Technology Committee, gave a brief progress update, and then took questions and comments.

Gale went into some detail about the difficulties of bringing broadband to housing projects, and also revealed that Verizon has no plans to bring fiber to the inner city, due to problems negotiating with landlords. Among the more intriguing suggestions was one from Danny Younger that the City promote the establishment of a .nyc TLD to help finance it's efforts.
