Babukishan is the scion of one of the most adored musical groups in India - The Bauls Of Bengal. While firmly rooted in traditional and devotional music, the Bauls are famously hedonistic, and open to collaboration. Back in the 60's they struck up a relationship with the Woodstock community, jamming with Dylan & The Band at Big Pink. Here we have Babu, on a visit to NYC in 2004, continuing that tradition, rocking out with Woodstock's Dharma Bums in an informal session in the Knit's old office. After things get going, russian folksinger Julia Vorontsova, who had opened, joins in on vocals and percussion, charming all.

And yes i have knocked up a VCD of the show, 10 songs in all (68:27). You can get from the pinstand for $4 inc. mail ($5 foreign) - if interested email orders@pinstand.com with the subject=VCD522, and I'll let you know the process. Paypal donations can be made direct to Babu via his website below and will be much appreciated. He's recently made, believe it or not, a reggae album, which is also available there. We have a baul pin on the stand, see the WWWhatsup.. |
