'piano phase'

We have already experienced pianist Emily Manzo's readiness to collaborate with members of Brooklyn's rock scene in #410. This time, as part of a recital at Columbia, she recruited Fat Bobby from Oneida as second piano to perform 'Piano Phase' - a 1967 piece by Steve Reich. As the title suggests it involves both players playing a repetitive motif slightly off tempo such that the music slowly changes phas until, eventually, and finally, they arrive back at the same place.. Afterwards I remarked to Bobby that it sounded remarkably like some Oneida material. "Our secret is out!" laughed Bobby. Unlike the first, more formal, part of the recital in which Emily previewed a Piano Sonata by Sofia Gubaidulina that she is set to perform in Chicago in July, she encouraged the audience to relax and stroll around during the Reich piece. The provided wine and cheese buffet was enthusiastically consumed by the members of Oneida, The Seconds, Ex-Models, and Oakley Hall present. The whole thing ran just over 20 minutes, the clip is around the third quarter - Emily rests for a moment before taking off with double the intensity.

And yes i have knocked up a VCD of the performance, that is VCD450 (1,20:12). I'm sorry to say there are a few camera clicks and other noises, and the light was limited to one strip of flourescents, but it is still good. You can get a copy from the pinstand for $4 inc. mail ($5 foreign) - if interested email orders@pinstand.com with the subject=VCD450, and I'll let you know the process (paypal accepted).
