I had intended to shoot Electric Turn To Me earlier in the week at the Knitting Factory. Unfortunately, and, considering the name, ironically, that was the day of the great east coast blackout and thus the show was cancelled. But I was able to make this one, on the Saturday, at the popular Tiswas night at Don Hill's. It was the first show of an extensive tour - 6 weeks in the US followed by 5 weeks in Europe - that reflects their transatlantic make up. Anchored by the controlledly manic drumming of Mars Volta founding member Blake Fleming, the band is fronted by a german girl called Silke on vocals and guitar. The line-up is filled out by another guitar, plus a droogy keyboard player, who also supplies the basslines. The songs are dynamically constructed with a kind of epic quality to them. Silke's voice, which wavered curiously at times, brings to mind Major Tom's more desperate moments, as I think you'll observe on the second clip 'Space'. The sight of her swivelling hips, navel tattoo, and general good looks, was plenty enough to secure a waver waiver. The first clip - 'Ride The Wave' - seemed particularly poignant as the band set off on it's great expedition.
