The Thrills, five lads from Dublin, saw their first album, powered by cute songs and harmonies, not to mention rocking keyboards, crash into the UK charts at no.3 earlier in the year. They followed up with a bunch of singles and much touring culminating in a 'heartwarming' (NME) performance at Glasto 03, and will open for the Stones at their London Astoria show later this month. Meanwhile, here they are, taking an initial kick at the old colonies. Inbetween sessions at MTV and VH1, they fit in an impromptu set at NYC's long running Sunday garage-pop night Shout!. This, according to the band, being their first acoustic appearance ever, though that's hard to believe. It's also hard to believe that they are that unfamiliar
with the USA since several of the songs concern american locations such as Vegas and, particularly, Santa Cruz and environs. e.g. 'Big Sur' (clip below), which seemed to be a band favorite, as they used it to soundcheck. I had never heard of Corey Haim, apparently a lost boy, but the band's evident concern is applaudable.. They finished up by promising 'We'll be a bit louder next time, and maybe we'll even plug in." And yes i did knock up a VCD of the show, short but sweet, 7 songs. But since then, the band have in touch and asked me to sit on 'Corey Haim', since it's unreleased, so it is now 6 songs.. I did have a slight audio prob, the board feed drops momentarily a couple of times, and the lighting is just a weak blob show and a wall-light, but it's still very good all in all. You can get a copy from the pinstand at the usual rate of $4 inc. mail ($5 foreign) - if you're interested email orders@pinstand.com with the subject=VCD306, and I'll let you know if and when.. |
