'what a waster'

This was, unofficially, Rough Trade week in NYC, with The Kills, freshly signed to the new US branch, and the The Libertines, darlings of the UK label, both in town for multiple shows. The Libs kicked off with this one, a Wednesday 10pm stormer in the hallowed hole on the Bowery. The band were definitely, as we say here, pumped up for the show and ripped their way through a set that included a number of new songs like 'Don't Look Back In The Sun' and 'Arbeit Macht Frei' (the famous phrase that used to be written over the door to Better Badges mail order dept) plus their hits 'What A Waster' and 'Up The Bracket', finishing up by inviting the crowd onstage for the happy stomper 'I Get Along'.

Shooting vid was not so easy. Having snuck out for a cig just before they came on, my spot was in the crowd. I was buffeted by ravers, and frustrated by a young blonde who kept raising her little digicam smack middle in my shot, as you will see in the clips. Also, CBGB's lighting guy, for some reason, plunged them into darkness for the most part. Nevertheless I think I got them pretty good and did get board audio. I knocked it down to VCD to give to the band and RT at the Friday Luxx show (which I also shot), but had a little difficulty titling some of the songs. I have now, more or less, worked out the setlist and am ready to spread a few around. You can get a copy from the pinstand at the usual $4 inc. mail ($5 foreign) - if interested sending an email to orders@pinstand.com with the subject=VCD267, and I'll let you know the how, or just paypal straight in at that address.
