'zen and the art of breaking everything in this room'

This show, in downtown on the day of the big anti-war demo, marked TV Smith's return to NYC after his first crack last year. Bryan Swirsky had creatively hooked him up with the World/Inferno Friendship Society for a north/east tour. Unlike the previous time, when he and Attila played to small appreciative audiences of older fans, this time he found himself playing to packed out houses of revved up youth - with whom he went down remarkably well, as one would expect. He used the occasion to showcase his own anti-war song, which concerns the freedom implications of security clampdowns.. and since, hmm, i seem to have mislaid the tape, the best i can suggest is that you go to his website and download the tune. Now to the W/IFS.. they are a phenomenon in their own right. A Brooklyn crew of Israeli extraction, they describe their music as 'cabaret punk'. Fronted by a slick vocalist/mc, instruments include xylophone, accordion, clarinet, and saxaphones, anchored by a whipping rhythm section. They go full tilt all the way, as does their crowd who know all the words to songs like the 'Zen..' above, 'I wouldn't want to live in a world without grudges', and 'Let's Steal Everything'. I've picked their opening and closing blasts as the clips.

And yes i have knocked this one down to VCD, all 18 songs. Shooting is a little chaotic as I try to keep up with the action and the tribeca light guy goes a bit wild with the strobe but sound is good. You can get a copy from the pinstand for $4 inc. mail ($5 foreign) - if interested email orders@pinstand.com with the subject=VCD252, and I'll let you know the process, or just paypal in straight to that address.
