'reggae fever'
|
Although this was not directly a Jammyland show, it follows in their tradition of pairing reggae veterans with young NYC musicians, and Ira did get up and play bass for one song. While Glen Adams' name is not widely known, his music is. He was the keyboard player in the original Upsetters, most of whom went on to become The Wailers, when they had a string of reggae hits in the late 60's. Steeped in spaghetti western and kung fu imagery, their sound defined skinhead moonstomp. In the 70's Glen stuck with Lee Perry, and was vocal coach for Max Romeo and The Congos, amongst others, while continuing his keyboard work, including making the first recording that went out under the name Augustus Pablo. Word had got around and thus this show was packed, mainly with the boots and braces crew but also a decent contingent of roots lovers. Unfortunately Glen himself had caught the nasty throw-up-for-24-hours flu that was going around NYC at the time. Nevertheless the show went on, and was a real treat. It was evident that he had not played some of the tunes in some time, but gamely took a shot for the ecstatic crowd and band. I understand that all concerned enjoyed themselves so much that a tour of Europe is in the works, presumably after a few more rehearsals :). |
