'For the record - the gossip are not garage-rock, we are punk.'

I was prompted to dig up this show after DIM MAK Recs saw fit to release the Gossip's part as a live album. I had sat on the tapes thinking the sound not quite good enough, but on getting a copy of the CD, discovered that their version is not much better than mine. If it's good enough for them.. There's no doubt it was a wicked wang dang doodle of an event, and worthy of media proliferation.

Before the Gossip were the Chromatics, Portland's basement rats, in what is, to my knowledge, their only East Coast visit prior to breaking up later in the year. They had opened for the Liars a couple of nights previous, and have a fair touch of that band's hard edge going for them. People raved about the drummer after that show, and not without cause.

Beth Ditto wanted to make sure we were under no mis-apprehensions on how to categorize her band, but despite the assurance above I myself would classify them as r&b without question. Punk r&b. Feminist punk r&b. Which led to a Knitting Factory jammed with hot jumping women. Hot hot hot. So hot that much clothing was removed as the night went on. As can be seen on the last clip, when the Chromatics joined them for a raucous finale of 'I Wanna Be Your Dog'.

And yes there are VCD's of the show, you have a choice of VCD161, which is complete sets from both bands, or VCD1612 - which is just the Gossip. I was unable to title any of the Chromatics' 6 songs, and only managed a couple of the Gossip's 11. Thus far. You can get copies from the pinstand for $4 inc. mail ($5 foreign) - if interested email orders@pinstand.com with the subject=VCD_Order, saying which you want. and I'll let you know the process. Or just paypal straight in at that same address.
