'Wah-Wah' |
I missed Citay on their earlier foray(s) east but was able to catch up with them at this, the first show of the current tour. The band, from San Francisco, was originally a studio project of Ezra Feinberg of Piano Magic and Tim Green of Nation of Ulysses/Fucking Champs. As often occurs this turned into a live project with an evolving line-up, now, with Tim no longer in the group, having relesed two albums. The current incarnation includes the duelling lead guitars of Josh Pollack and Sean Smith, which lends the band Allmanesque overtones. The band's drummer is Warren Huegel of Tussle. I was surprised to discover that both he and Josh play in Daevid Allen's Soft Machine cover band University of Errors - I have some vid of that I should post up. Anyway, Citay's driving psyche is in the same league as Vetiver - but less folky, and Oakley Hall - but less country, and more ecstatic all round. I've picked the last two songs of the set 'Little Kingdom' - title track of their most recent album - and the George Harrison cover 'Wah-Wah'. A strong support bill comprised Christy & Emily, with whom punkcast viewers should be well familiar, and Land of Tomorrow - a new Brooklyn band that includes Andrew Deutsch from Home. The band's sound is characterised by Chad Laird's shimmering guitar and the swirling autoharp of Cindy Wheeler - somewhat less so on this show as she was having trouble with her effects pedals. The songs I've picked from C&E are the un-released 'Chicken Little' and 'Ghost', which is on their Gueen's Head album. LoT are yet to release anything beyond a couple of tunes on their myspace - I've picked the philosophical lament 'One Step Forward' and the gentle 'Emily Up and Down'. |
