'Riot On Sunset Strip'

Domenic Priore's book 'Riot On Sunset Strip; Rock'N'Roll's Last Stand in Hollywood' concerns the brief period in the mid 60's when Los Angeles, specifically Hollywood, became the nexus of surf music, folk-rock, pop art, soul, jazz, activism, psychedelics and hedonism that marked the birth of modern rock culture. It was rapidly busted out of existence by the City Fathers. The riot itself occurred on Nov 12 1966 when cops shut down the Pandora's Box club that was a central component. Later a movie, a psyche-trash classic, was made based on the events of that evening. In the first clip below, after he had read a passage about how the arrival of Hockney and activities of Warhol fueled a burgeoning art scene, Domenic is asked how the teens of the day related to that. He suggests it was the artist's activist events that sealed the relationship. In the second clip he traces the path, via that same activist environment, from bubblegum to Woodstock. He concludes by scorning the revisionist 'Summer Of Love' hype. Both of his proposed guests, Gary Panter and Artie Kornfeld, were no shows. However, serendipitously, an audience member had encountered Mark Loomis, a founding member of the Chocolate Watch Band - who actually appeared in the original movie - outside on the street and invited him in. Mark was prevailed upon to talk, and gave insight into the frustrations, much due to restrictive performance laws, that caused the thriving early NYC 60s folk-rock scene to start California Dreamin'. He also pointed out that a not small reason the teens liked the radical art scene was that it was one place that, given California 21+ drinking laws, they could socialize and booze freely (3rd clip).

Update: 9/11/07: It turns out that the fellow we'd thought was Mark Loomis is not him at all. Whether this was because of fakery or innocent mistakery is not clear. I don't think he ever actually claimed to be Loomis. Anyone know who he is? His input on the noted topics was nevertheless valid and interesting.
